Today I was experimenting using the manual settings on my camera and trying to take pictures of “critters” in flight. This isn’t the sharpest picture in the world, but I thought it looked kinda cool. This is a female Cardinal heading over to the bird feeder.

These guys are all over the place. I’m not sure what situation(s) (weather, plants, nest) has contributed to these being so prevalent, but there are a ton of them flying around the backyard the last couple of weeks. From what I read, they build their nests in dead wood, bamboo, or “wood dwellings” (i.e., houses). …

In the midst of taking pictures of the Hummingbird Moths, a gigantic Dragonfly decided to fly around our porch light. I don’t have a ruler handy (so if someone wants to measure the size of this thing based on the picture, feel free), but this was one of the largest Dragonfly’s I’ve ever seen.

The Mock Orange Bush Lakeview Jasmine is still in full bloom and shortly after sunset the Hummingbird Moths arrived in large numbers. Only a few problems. I don’t really know how to take photographs in low light situations, these Hummingbird Moths move as fast as lightning, and I don’t have a great lens for taking…

I don’t think I’ve ever seen this particular Dragonfly in the backyard, but he showed up this evening. If the pictures in the book I have are correct it’s a Halloween Pennant Dragonfly. If anyone thinks it might be something different, please let me know

This guy got beat with the ugly stick. I’m pretty sure these guys eat other bugs, if he doesn’t scare them off first.

Or at least watch Mating Stink bugs do it. Nearly all these insect pictures were taken from the Passion Vine. There’s an entire war/lovefest happening over there. I grabbed some pictures of them, then Leecy squashed them. We like to practice birth control

I thought this was a Bumble Bee but it was kinda dark for a Bumble Bee to be hanging around. Then I looked at his eyes. He’s transforming, dying, or something, but whatever it is, he’s looking rather strange. Anyone know what is going on with this insect? Why the big green eyes and not…

Our Mock Orange Lakeview Jasmine bush exploded in blooms tonight. Then for whatever reason there were about 6 Hummingbird Moths flying around, This picture was not easy to take. These critters fly very fast, and it’s dark outside, so difficult to get a clear picture. However, I still got a shot, not the best, but…

Lots of these Assassin bugs around all the sudden especially near the Passion Vine. Normally I would do my best to eradicate them since they also eat Butterfly larvae, but right now they seem really focused on eating this little irritating fly. That is until Leecy comes along and becomes an Assassin Assassin:-)

Now this is a leg model. This American Bullfrog that we found in our pool has very long legs. You should see it jump!

With a face only a mother could love, Michael J. Bullfrog was sitting on the moss rock when I got home. I would think he would have been a little warm sitting on those rocks while the sun was still out, but he didn’t seem to notice.

Michael J. Frog made another appearance today. His appearance was a little early than we expected him (he normally doesn’t come out until after dark) but we spooked him while pulling some weeds. I still can’t get over what strong leg power he has. Imagine trying to sit in the pool, without holding on to…

I don’t see many Honeybees lately, but we do have quite a few of these Bumble Bees for some reason. One plant they apparently love is the Cigar Bush (Cuphea ignea), along with Hummingbirds and Swallowtails. If you don’t have this plant, it would sure be a good one to get just for the amount…
