We’ve had a male Ruby Throated Hummingbird hanging around for quite a while now, but a female suddenly appeared which has made the male much more active. It’s been a strange year for the Ruby Throats in our backyard as we…  I’ve never seen this type of Woodpecker in my part of the woods before. It’s a Red Headed Woodpecker. I really wish I had a 500mm lens, but I used what I had (300mm). I saw this Woodpecker at the same time Leecy and I were watching over 20 Indigo Buntings fly overhead. Unfortunately none…  I’m sorry I haven’t taken any photos of the Bluebird babies the last couple of days, although I can assure everyone they are doing quite well. Today it is raining, and yesterday I got home too late to take any pictures. I promise I’ll post some pictures of the babies tomorrow. Since today is day…  So far so good on day three of the Eastern Bluebird babies watch. We still count five babies. Mother and Father are extremely tolerant of me doing a once a day nest check. Maybe it’s just me, but I could swear I actually see more down on these babies today compared to yesterday.  Today is day two of the Eastern Bluebird nest with what was 4 baby birds. I’m happy to report that the final egg did hatch. This first picture isn’t very clear, but it is rather cute. Four of the five babies are obviously quite hungry. As to why the fifth baby bird wasn’t so hungry? …  Our first ever Eastern Bluebird babies have hatched. Well, most of them hatched. When I first checked the nest this evening, there were two newborns. When I checked one last time for the evening, we had four. So only one did not hatch, and I’ll know for sure if it didn’t hatch tomorrow morning. Truth…  I have some nesting updates. We have 10 Purple Martin nests so far. No eggs, but you could tell they were nests. There were some others that were questionable, but I didn’t count them. The Eastern Bluebirds are still doing well with their 5 eggs. I would expect them to hatch late this week sometime. … There is a Bluejay who I see daily bathing in the disappearing bird stream. Today my Wingscapes Bird Cam captured several video snapshots of the bird bathing in the stream. I strung a few of them together using iMovie.  I mentioned several posts ago that I haven’t seen many Ruby Throated Hummingbirds this Spring season and that is still true. I have seen a male roaming around but he doesn’t spend too much time around the feeders. It could be because I have many nectar plants in bloom this year or some other reason,…  Good news. I finally got my camera back from Canon. Bad news, I didn’t really check my camera settings before I started shooting. Oh well, at least I have my camera back. I checked the Bluebird nest today and it looks like she is holding steady with 5 eggs, which is about average. As soon…  Today is day five of mamma Bluebird’s egg laying. Not surprisingly, she has laid five eggs. Leecy noticed a peculiar behavior of the female Bluebird. She will be in her nest, but as soon as we open the back door, she will peer up through the nest hole. The male, always close by, will fly…  Today is day 3 of the Eastern Bluebird nest. The female has laid a total of 3 eggs. I still don’t have my camera, so I have to resort to Leecy’s camera phone. Both parents wait for meal worms early in the morning and late in the afternoon. I’m guessing it will be another day… Yea! We have our first Eastern Bluebird egg. The female laid the egg this morning. What I learned from the Texas Bluebird Society is that the female will lay one egg per day, before mid-morning. The normal clutch size is 3-6, with the average being 4-5. If all goes as planned, the female should be… So I spend all this money on 8 different cameras, and what camera gives me the best videos of the birds in the bird stream? The Wingscapes Birdcam. Oh well. The Doves must really like it. You’ll see 3 Doves all together drinking and then splashing water on one another. If you watch the video… Another video to share. This is of a fledgling Redwinged Blackbird (I think) that likes to hang around the disappearing bird stream. It also likes to try and hide under a rock right near the waterfall of the stream. |
