Backyard Winter Birds At The Feeders

Well, it’s been a long time since I have posted any pictures.  Quite honestly I was just taking a break, and running a little short on time. Despite the dreariness of Winter, I do have quite a few Winter birds in my backyard including American Goldfinches, Pine Warblers, Pine Siskins, House Finches, Northern Cardinals, Tufted […]

Goldfinches Are Still Around In Beautiful Plumage

Normally during this time of year the Goldfinches have moved on from my backyard, but not this year.  Not only do I finally get to see them in their beautiful yellow plumage, but I frequently see them drinking out of my disappearing bird stream.

American Goldfinch In Early Morning

I love these little birds and wish they were around longer than a few months of Winter.  I don’t know how to really articulate the song they make but it’s such a pleasant sound early in the morning.  It also makes great background music when I am enjoying my morning white chocolate latte:-).

Male Eastern Bluebird And Two American Goldfinches Sharing Tree Branches

This might be one of the coolest bird pictures I have taken.  I had just set up the new Bluebird House with the hidden BirdCam and I heard the distinctive call of the Eastern Bluebird.  I ran inside to get some mealworms as I figured the Bluebirds would be coming to visit soon. Sure enough, […]

Disappearing Bird Stream Construction Stage Three

I’m now on stage 3 of my disappearing bird stream.  I’ve finished most of the actual layout.  I still need to mortar the rocks, get a ton of mulch for the whole area, and do some more landscaping. I had delivered 3000 pounds of moss rock, and smaller amounts of river pebbles and pond rock […]

More American Goldfinches Arrive

I really like these little birds.  I like how they constantly are doing their little tweets.  I even noticed several at my work today and was pointing them out to one of my colleagues.  Then I get to my office and think I have a bug on my shirt and it turns out one of […]

American Goldfinches Have Arrived

Another very warm day today in Houston, and some unusual bird activity for me.  For whatever reason, the American Goldfinches arrived today.  I counted at least 6.  That’s a small number compared to the masses we had last year, but they did appear a little earlier than last year as well. I only have Thistle […]

American Goldfinches Dropping From The Sky

I’m not exaggerating when I say we probably have 50 or so American Goldfinches hanging out at the feeders.  I like these little birds, even more so because they crowd the feeder so much that it appears to intimidate the Sparrows we have. Not only are the Goldfinches swarming the main feeder, but when I […]

Red Bellied Woodpecker Joins The Flock Of Goldfinches

Today was an awesome day for the backyard birds!  We had the usual American Goldfinches all over the place, a Red Bellied Woodpecker, and our first Eastern Bluebird couple (more on that in a later post). It was a little foggy this morning, but good enough to bring out my one man chair blind to […]

American Goldfinches Are All Over The Place

We have so many American Goldfinches right now they can’t fit on just one feeder! They seem to know the ritual; wait until I put seed out in the morning, raid the feeder, go back in the trees until the afternoon.  In the afternoon, wait until I refill the seed, raid the feeder. I also […]

American Goldfinches And House Finch On Bird Feeder

We had tons of American Goldfinches around the bird feeder today.  We also had a House Finch feeding as well.  It’s really cold here right now so finding fresh food is a bit of a challenge right now. Taking good pictures was a real challenge as the lighting was terrible and it was cloudy and […]

American Goldfinch

The other day I was debating whether the new Backyard Birds I was seeing were Pine Warblers or American Goldfinches.  I settled on the bird being a Pine Warbler. I finally figured out how to tell the difference between a Pine Warbler and an American Goldfinch. The beak on the Pine Warbler (above) is a […]

New Birds For The Backyard: Pine Warbler

To be honest, I’m assuming these pictures are of a Pine Warbler.  It could also be an American Goldfinch.  I’ve gone back and forth in all my bird books and even checked out Greg Lavaty’s website (a real expert on birds), and I still can’t say for certain what kind of bird this is.  If […]
