I went back out today to take more pictures of the Wildflowers. I figured if I got lucky, I’d get some nice Butterfly shots, and if I really got lucky, I’d get some Hummingbird pictures as well. Most of the Sunflowers in the field had already bloomed, but of the few that were not done blooming there were a variety of insects attracted to them. In this picture is a huge Carpenter Bee on a Sunflower.  Here’s something you don’t see every day, or at least I don’t. While I was browsing the field of Sunflowers, I noticed some unusual shape. Upon closer inspection it turns out it was a Praying Mantis eating another Praying Mantis.  Today was the first Queen Butterfly we’ve seen for 2010. She was laying eggs on the Milkweed. I never could manage to get a decent picture of her as she was constantly flying about. You may also notice all the Aphids on the Milkweed. I’ve tried spraying them and wiping them off by hand. In fact, I thought the one I saw was one that the Martins caught yesterday. Fortunately for me (or the Dragonfly), there was at least one more of these today. This is a Twelve Spotted Skimmer. They are apparently quite common.  I have no idea what this is so if you know, please share with me. Does it eat other bugs? What I do know is this is pretty darn big and scary looking.  This particular male Purple Martin is the hardest working dad in birding. He catches numerous Dragonflies each day and brings him to the 5 babies that are nesting in the Martin house. He rarely seems to rest. He’s also very protective of the nest, at least towards my dogs. If the dogs are out walking... |
