Polyphemus Moth

I have to give Sascha (German Shepherd) credit for finding this.  We were walking back from the ice machine and she bumped into this outdoor grill.  Suddenly I saw this big ol’ Moth on the ground. I used a twig to place it on some walking stones, then took some pictures.  This Moth was almost...

Queen Butterfly In Flight Through Wildflowers

I went back out today to take more pictures of the Wildflowers.  I figured if I got lucky, I’d get some nice Butterfly shots, and if I really got lucky, I’d get some Hummingbird pictures as well. Well, I got lucky!  These might be some of my most favorite pictures I’ve ever taken. This is...

Carpenter Bee On Giant Sunflower

Most of the Sunflowers in the field had already bloomed, but of the few that were not done blooming there were a variety of insects attracted to them. In this picture is a huge Carpenter Bee on a Sunflower.

Praying Mantis Eating Another Praying Mantis On Sunflower

Here’s something you don’t see every day, or at least I don’t. While I was browsing the field of Sunflowers, I noticed some unusual shape.  Upon closer inspection it turns out it was a Praying Mantis eating another Praying Mantis.

First Queen Butterfly And A Skunk

Today was the first Queen Butterfly we’ve seen for 2010.  She was laying eggs on the Milkweed.  I never could manage to get a decent picture of her as she was constantly flying about. You may also notice all the Aphids on the Milkweed.  I’ve tried spraying them and wiping them off by hand.  I’m...

The Purple Martins have all fled the nest. They come...

Cluster Of Leaffooted Bugs

Picture these bugs crawling through your bed at night:-). These are Leaffooted Bugs.  We tend to find most of them on our Tomato plant and Giant Sunflower plant.  Interestingly enough, this big cluster was on our Sago Palm. I know the adults fly, and fortunately this group couldn’t fly. So I pulled out my primary...

Twelve Spotted Skimmer

I saw one of these Dragonflies yesterday.  In fact, I thought the one I saw was one that the Martins caught yesterday. Fortunately for me (or the Dragonfly), there was at least one more of these today.  This is a Twelve Spotted Skimmer.  They are apparently quite common.

Big Scary Black Bug On Pepper Plant

I have no idea what this is so if you know, please share with me.  Does it eat other bugs? What I do know is this is pretty darn big and scary looking.

Purple Martins Love Dragonflies

This particular male Purple Martin is the hardest working dad in birding.  He catches numerous Dragonflies each day and brings him to the 5 babies that are nesting in the Martin house.  He rarely seems to rest.  He’s also very protective of the nest, at least towards my dogs.  If the dogs are out walking...
