I kept hearing a knocking sound so I started scanning the trees.  I figured it was some kind of Woodpecker, I just couldn’t tell what kind.  I finally spotted the Woodpecker making all the noise.  It was a Downy Woodpecker.  First time I have ever seen one of these birds.

After taking a few more pictures of the Woodpecker I continued to just look and listen.

Although I didn’t hear anything, I did notice a big flock of birds in the distance.  They just kept flying around in a large circle.  I had no idea what kind of birds these were until I got home and looked them up in one of my books.

These are American White Pelicans.

About 30 minutes later I decided it was time for me to get out of the tall grass.  Honestly, I was pretty nervous as it was getting a little warm and this looked like the perfect habitat for snakes.

I walked most of the trails, but didn’t see much more wildlife.  I did see a few Squirrels eating nuts, but that was about it.  Towards the end of one of the trails there was a view across the lake.  It was there that I spotted a Great Blue Heron.

Three hours later I decided to call it a day.  My back was starting to hurt and I didn’t want to completely wear myself out on my first day of vacation.

Suddenly, right in front of me a family of Deer appeared.  As tall as this grass was, I’m sure they were laying down until they heard me walking towards them.

I tried to stay motionless, but someone was walking their dog in the park without a leash.  Then that dog started barking at me (or maybe it was the Deer).  I took one more shot of the Deer before they ran off.  I’m guessing there were about 3-4 Deer.  Fortunately I didn’t see a male, otherwise I might have been in trouble.
