Long Time No Post

Hello everyone. I know it’s been a long time since I posted anything, a little over 1 year in fact. I have a couple of excuses, but none that are really that great, so I’ll just be honest. It seems like I’m making lots of posts about animals and wildlife and my pets on Facebook. I held off joining that thing as long as possible, but I finally did join about 1 year ago. The second reason is that it seems like I rarely use my professional camera lens, and I just run around with my iphone taking pictures.

So anyway, let me share some news. My last post on February 23, 2015 was addressed to my previous German Shepherds veterinarians and my gratitude for the care they gave her. I still tear up a bit thinking about her, but I made a large poster of her and her life moment and that hangs in my room.  On August 16, 2015, my new German Shepherd puppy was born. Her name is Kaja which translates to Princess of Gods in Polish.

Kaja as a puppy

Well this “little” puppy arrived at 8 weeks from the Czech Republic weighing 19 pounds. Sascha was 13 pounds at 8 weeks by way of comparison. Now this “little” puppy at just a hair over 7 months old is probably close to 85 pounds!

Again, comparing her to Sascha, I don’t think Sascha ever reached 85 pounds throughout her life. This dog is going to be huge! My Golden Retriever Maggie is still kicking at 14 years old. A little slower, not so great vision or hearing, but still the same ol’ happy dog.

My backyard is still the wildlife paradise it’s always been. I probably have 100 or more Monarch caterpillars in my backyard right now. I have a ton of milkweed as each year the seeds disperse, and they have cleared my entire backyard of any milkweed leaves.

My Purple Martin residents are in full swing right now and just started mating. I would expect them to start building their nests within the next week or so.

Last, but not least, I have an Eastern Bluebird nest with 4 babies. As of today they are 11 days old and looking very healthy.

So that’s the latest in a nutshell. Thanks for reading!:-)

Cathy Gronau - I love your website. I’ve been growing milkweed for only 2 years now and it’s become an obsession now. I have at the least; thousands of monarch caterpillars and at 50+ hanging and getting ready to emerge. I’m trying to grow more milkweed by the day to feed what is about to happen in my yard :). I am located in Southern California where the weather is nearly perfect year round so no wonder they love it here. Anyway, I just wanted to drop a line to say I love your site and am hooked on these beautiful butterflies. I have lived on “Avenida Mariposa” which in Spanish means “street of the butterfly” for over 30 years, so it’s about time I took up this hobby. And I too have large dogs. Take care and thank you for your amazing site!April 3, 2016 – 4:21 pm

texdr - Thank you Cathy!April 9, 2016 – 11:34 am

Cathy - I just wanted to share with you that I now have over 130 hanging (and those are only the ones I see) with Monarch Butterflies coming out daily. They are attaching everywhere; it’s quite unbelievable. What a fun hobby. I am already growing more milkweed for when they all “hatch”. Take care!April 9, 2016 – 9:52 pm
