Ruby Throated Hummingbirds Getting Fat

I still have about 5 Ruby Throated Hummingbirds hanging around, and they all are getting quite fat.  They are also becoming increasingly aggressive with one another around the feeders.  I happened to catch this male staking his claim on the feeder by the disappearing bird stream.

Camille - The hummingbirds are getting very fat!! What are you putting in that nectar? Beer? It looks like they are getting a beer gut- LOL. It is good to see nice healthy hummingbirds!! Keep up the good work!
I was wondering, the ruby throated hummingbirds look different than the ones we have here. The males here have bright red throats, where it looks like your males have blackish colored throats. Why is that? Now, the females here are very drab, but the males are gorgeous!!May 7, 2013 – 10:23 pm

texdr - Just my normal 2 cups of sugar in 8 cups of water. I guess between the 5 feeders and all the nectar plants, they are getting plenty of nutrition for the next stage of their journey!May 8, 2013 – 11:53 am

Don & Kate - I thought that you were in the area where you got hummers all summer long. Do yours stop over for a short while in the spring and fall, and then move on?May 9, 2013 – 5:50 am

texdr - Yep I live in Houston, so the Ruby Throats show up around March-April, and start to disappear about mid-May. They come back around October if I remember correctly. They “can” stay around for most of the Summer, but most do migrate. I have around 5-7 that are hanging around right now, and judging by how fat they are, plus this front that is moving in, I fully expect them to start heading north any time now.May 9, 2013 – 10:28 pm
