I’m not sure who is more trained, the pair of Eastern Bluebirds or me. Who am I kidding? I’m the one who is trained! Either I hear their calls early in the morning or early evening, or they flat out fly over to where I feed them mealworms and just stare at me.
Speaking of mealworms, I’m refusing to buy meal worms from the local pet store. Ninety-nine percent of the time half of them are dead, and the container they come in has clearly been sitting in the store for quite a while. In fact, other than the mealworms I have managed to raise myself, I get all of my mealworms and bedding from Camillies Vita Mealies. I’m not promoting them because I get something from free, rather it’s because Camille has always answered any questions I have, their organic bedding (if it’s good enough for the mealworms it’s got to be good enough for the Bluebirds), and their mealworms are huge compared to what I get in the local pet store.
So back to the Bluebirds. I haven’t witnessed any type of mating behaviors as of yet, nor have I seen them begin any type of nest building (at least in my yard), but both of the birds look really healthy and I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.
