I knew after the Purple Martins left last year that I would be upgrading my Purple Martin housing this year. I did have a Water’s Edge 14 room house (they don’t make this size anymore), but with a pole that I had to manually lift from its housing to check on the nests. That’s just way too difficult for a person to do by themselves.
Because Susan over at Purple Martins R Us sells more Purple Martin housing than any other site that I know of, and she knows more about Purple Martins than anyone I know of, I did a little shopping on her site.
Since I purchased a 12 room gourd system from her last year, and because the Purple Martins I have had for the last several years are used to non-gourd systems, I decided to purchase the Trendsetter 12 room housing with the Trendsetter nesting trays.
I spent the last 1.5 days pouring concrete to anchor the pole and installing the housing. Below are some of the pictures (and I don’t want to hear any comments about all the dog toys in the yard:-).

Twelve Room Trendsetter Purple Martin Housing Up Close
Here’s an up close picture. You can see the rooms are staggered. I placed numbers on each of the rooms so I can keep track of everything.

Inside Of Trendsetter Purple Martin Housing
The inside of each room is very spacious (compared to the Water’s Edge systems). By default, all rooms come with plastic? (or rubber) grating, but I ordered the upgraded wooden nesting trays.

Trendsetter Purple Martin Nesting Trays
Above is a picture of the Trendsetter nesting tray. Note that it is turned on it’s side in this picture. To place inside of the Trendsetter housing, you simply remove the plastic grates and place these inside. They fit perfectly.
Now only one thing is missing. The Purple Martins! Last year they arrived in early February. I’ll be sure and post an update once they do arrive, and how they appear to react to their new housing.
