I was watering the grass today and saw something quite unusual in the bottom of the pool.
This is an adult Small Mouth Salamander, that is roughly 5.5 inches (14 centimeters). I almost never see them unless I’m digging a whole in some moist soil, or when they happen to get caught in the pool skimmer. Unfortunately, in nearly 100% of the cases where I have found them in the pool, they later die. I’m assuming it’s because I have a salt water pool and the salinity does something to them that causes them to die.
It was still living when I retrieved it from the pool. I put it in our garden under some moist soil, and it started moving around. I thought it would recover, but then I noticed that it had stopped moving.
