Unusual Backyard Visitor

I was watering the grass today and saw something quite unusual in the bottom of the pool.

Adult Small Mouth Salamander

Adult Small Mouth Salamander

This is an adult Small Mouth Salamander, that is roughly 5.5 inches (14 centimeters).  I almost never see them unless I’m digging a whole in some moist soil, or when they happen to get caught in the pool skimmer.  Unfortunately, in nearly 100% of the cases where I have found them in the pool, they later die.  I’m assuming it’s because I have a salt water pool and the salinity does something to them that causes them to die.

It was still living when I retrieved it from the pool.  I put it in our garden under some moist soil, and it started moving around.  I thought it would recover, but then I noticed that it had stopped moving.

texdr - Yea met too. I tried to do little mini-chest compressions, but I guess that only works on humans and turtles (remind me to tell you about that some day).April 2, 2011 – 4:43 pm
