Cottonmouth And Garter Snake In Backyard

Oh boy, what a day.  Two big snakes in one day is a little much for me.

I started off by looking in the Bamboo for any new bird nests (the Cardinals built a few nests in there last year).  Suddenly right in front of my face is a funny looking branch, which I could tell was a pretty big Garter Snake.  I run back inside to grab my video camera and my snake tongs.

Obviously I missed catching the snake.  If I had caught it, I was just going to toss it over the fence.

Then tonight I’m letting the dogs out and Maggie (Golden Retriever) and Sascha (German Shepherd) are sniffing the air like crazy.  I instantly start scanning the yard for a Skunk or a Raccoon.  I don’t see a thing.  Then Maggie starts sniffing this big brown thing in the grass.  It didn’t take but a second for me to recognize that this was a poisonous snake.  I call the dogs back inside (thank goodness Maggie didn’t get bit as she was sniffing the tail of the Snake), grab my Snake tongs once again, and tell Leecy there is a big snake in the yard.

I know I will be criticized for this, but I had Leecy “euthanize” the snake.  I realize I’ve created a great habitat for lots of critters, including snakes, but I just can’t risk myself, Leecy, or the dogs being bitten by one of the poisonous snakes.  Time to go buy more “Snake Away” at Lowes as that has worked pretty well in the past.
