Testing Out The Wingscapes Birdcam

I wanted to share a small video taken with the Wingscapes Birdcam.  I also want to share what I’ve learned, so if others are considering purchasing this Birdcam, they won’t make the same mistakes I have.

In order of appearance are American Goldfinches, Norther Cardinal (female), Mockingbird, Blue Jay, 2 Red Bellied Woodpeckers, Squirrel (grrrrr), and a Tufted Titmouse.  I blended several videos together as the Birdcam only takes 10 second videos each recording.

This video requires Adobe Flash for playback.

Here’s what I think I’ve done wrong.  The instructions said to think about the background so I tried to place the Birdcam in a direction that would record the activity at the feeder, yet also show the background of our Wildflower Garden.  The camera was pointing in a North-South direction which tends to lead to some over and under exposed videos.  Also, the camera is about 3 feet away from the bird feeder.  While you can generally make out what kind of bird is at the feeder, those little birds like the Tufted Titmouse are more difficult to identify.

If you have pesky Squirrels like I do, be prepared for a large majority of your videos to contain Squirrels.  I end up deleting 3/4 of what was recorded as I’m generally not interested in posting Squirrel videos (unless they do something entertaining).

Today I moved the camera back to an East-West direction.  That should help with the over and under exposed videos, but it makes for a less pleasing background.  I’ll try this out for a couple of days, but I’m contemplating moving the camera just a little closer to the feeder.
