Ten Purple Martins

Boy oh boy, the Purple Martins are in full force now.  We counted 10 of them today flying in and out of the Martin House.

I don’t know what the birding term is for flirting, but the male and female Purple Martins were really interacting with one another.

I wish there was some way I could convey the sounds in my backyard.  In one moment, you’ll just hear the gentle rustling of the pool waterfall and the bird fountains placed throughout the yard, then a short while later you’ll hear these little tweets coming from the trees, look up and see a large flock of American Goldfinches, then the next moment you’ll hear the unmistakable sound of the Purple Martins singing while flying around the Martin house.  I find it very peaceful.  Maybe I can try and record some video tomorrow so you can experience what I experience.

So anyway, back to the Purple Martins.  It’s really nice seeing and hearing them again.  They were “talking” up a storm today.  Males and females nuzzling, or nipping at each other, disappearing inside the Martin house, then dashing out to fly circles around the house.  I took lots of pictures of them, and wasn’t happy with nearly all of them.  I’m still trying to get my technique down of moving birds and butterflies, since I’m out of practice.
