I’m telling you this weather is making the birds crazy. We’ve never seen so many species in our backyard at one time. I’m sure I’m leaving out a couple of species I saw today, but here’s what I saw.
- Yellow Rumped Warblers
- Orange Crowned Warbler
- Purple Martin
- Red Bellied Woodpeckers
- Northern Cardinals
- Mourning Doves
- House Finch
- American Goldfinches
- Eastern Bluebirds
Here’s a couple of pictures.
I took this in the late afternoon. I thought something may be wrong with this American Goldfinch. It was just sitting in the bird feeder and would occasionally fall asleep. Then it would wake up, eat a bit of seed, then fall back asleep. Based on how round this little one is, maybe it was overeating.
This next picture is a House Finch. We see them, but not all too frequently.
Although I didn’t get pictures of them today, the Eastern Bluebirds returned and were investigating one of the houses I put up for them. They would sit on the house, then appeared to both squeeze into the house, fly around, then repeat the same behaviors.
I’m also noticing that many of the birds are starting to mate. The females don’t seem particularly thrilled by this, as the males keep chasing them.
