Purple Martins Arrived One Day After House Goes Up

I have a feeling this is going to be a strange year.  While I know the Northeastern U.S. has snow on the ground and it’s freezing cold up there, down here in Houston we’re in the upper 70’s to low 80’s.  It’s not Spring, but I’m thinking the birds are starting to think it is.

Take the Purple Martins.  Thanks to Leecy’s record keeping, we know we put up the Purple Martin house on March 4, 2010.  We didn’t see our first Purple Martin until a week later.

Yesterday Leecy and I put up the Purple Martin house since we were cleaning up the backyard.  I certainly didn’t expect to see any Purple Martins for at least a few weeks.  Well, today we saw 7 Purple Martins, and they were already investigating the house.

Based on their reaction, I think they were as surprised to see me as I was to see them.  Hopefully we’ll have as good a year as we did last year.
