Osprey Hunting Catfish

Leecy and I went to Quintana yesterday (Saturday) which is supposed to be an excellent birding location, but the weather was terrible.  We drove 90 miles (each way) for nothing.  It was very cold, very windy, and rainy.  I didn’t even take one picture believe it or not.

Today I decide to go to Lake Houston, which is not typically known as a hot spot for birding and got some fantastic bird pictures.

This first bird is an Osprey.  I spotted this one about 1/4 mile away from where I was originally shooting, drove to a somewhat better location (it was sitting in a very high tree in the beginning), then it suddenly took flight!  I started shooting like crazy and watched this giant bird dive in the water and grab some kind of fish.  Since it was still quite a way in the distance (even with a 500mm lens) none of the shots were that great.

Next thing I know this Osprey starts flying right towards me!  It landed in the tree not too far from where I was shooting, and had a nice size catfish in its talons.

It didn’t take long for it to notice I was pretty close by, so it flew to the other side of the lake and enjoyed its catfish for probably a good hour or so.
