Today was a great day for a multitude of reasons. As I predicted at the beginning of the week, we had more Monarch Butterflies today than at any other time thus far. More on that in a later post.
What was truly amazing (besides the number of Monarchs in the backyard today) was that I spotted a Pair of Bald Eagles flying over my yard!
Here’s what happened. I was letting the dogs out for a potty break and I heard this weird sound coming from somewhere. It sounded like some kind of bird, but not a bird I had heard before. I walked towards the fence that faces the woods and just listened for a moment. The sound coming from whatever it was was “shrillish.” That’s the best way I can describe it. It also sounded off in the distance. I then listened again. I looked up, and there they were. A pair of Bald Eagles flying right over my backyard!
For some folks, seeing a Bald Eagle may not be a big deal, but for me, someone who has never seen a wild Bald Eagle, this was a treat. These two majestic birds just kept flying in a circle.
I grabbed the camera, knowing that my 100-400mm lens would never be able to get a closeup, BUT, you can definitely tell they were Bald Eagles and not Vultures.
After looking at the first image, it made me wish for my dream 500mm lens even more.
The Bald Eagles circled overhead for just a couple of minutes, then flew off in the distance.
Has anyone else in the Houston area heard of, or seen Bald Eagles before?
