Diamond Backed Water Snake In Pool

It’s always something around this house.  Leecy and I were getting ready to let the dogs out, but first I had to check the back yard to make sure the coast was clear.  As you may have seen from my other post tonight, I saw a really young Skunk.

Once the Skunk was scared away I walked back towards the house to tell Leecy the coast was clear, and noticed a little swirl in the pool.  I look down and there was a Snake.

Here I go again.  I see that I have a pair of garden gloves on the outside table so I slip those on.  “Leecy, grab the flashlight!”  It’s gone.

I can’t give up that easily, so I turn on the waterfall to the pool.  Leecy finds the Snake.  I run around to where the Snake is at, what until it’s just a little bit closer, then I strike (meaning I stuck my gloved hand in the pool to grab the Snake).

“Leecy, grab your camera!”

Once again, it’s completely dark outside.  I hope this snake isn’t poisonous, although I probably should have thought of that before I grabbed it.

“Okay Leecy, what do they eyes look like?”  “Do they have slits or are they round?”  Round she says.  Phew, it’s likely not a poisonous Snake then.  It’s also quite small, so if it does have fangs, hopefully it can’t bite through the glove I am wearing.

Snake is acting very calm.  Time for more analysis.  Doesn’t look like a Pit Viper, and I already noticed the round eyes.  My first thought was perhaps a Texas Brown Snake.

“Leecy, we need some more pictures.”  She takes a couple more, and I, pretending like I know for absolute certainty it isn’t poisonous, decide it’s safe to release in the backyard to hunt frogs or whatever it eats.

Once I get back inside I’ll look through my Snake books to determine what specific snake this was.

After further review, it appears to be a Diamond Backed Water Snake.  We’ve never had nor seen one of those before.

Walking back into the house I catch something else out of the corner of my eye.  “Leecy, grab your camera again.”

It’s a nice little Green Tree Frog hanging on the bricks.  Perhaps it was making sure the Snake was gone before venturing any further.

Now you know what it’s like at our house as soon as you walk out the back door.  You may see nothing (unlikely), or chances are you will see a few things.  All of the above events took place over just 10 minutes.

Time to go to bed now, only I hear or see something crawling across my face.  If that occurs, I’ll get the picture first, then ask what it was:-)
