Giant Swallowtail Caterpillar On Orange Tree

This Giant Swallowtail Caterpillar has been really growing.

Before taking the picture I touched the Caterpillar and it shot out its Osmeterium (two antennae).

Shortly after I took this picture I went back so look at it, and it was gone.  Hopefully a wasp didn’t get it.

texdr - I live in Houston, TX. I have never been successful in bringing indoors a giant swallowtail caterpillar. They really love our orange trees. I gave up on trying to bring them inside to protect them from predators since I was never successful in raising them. I just let them fend for themselves.

This year I have seen fewer giant swallowtails than all previous years. I assume it’s because of the significant drought we are experiencingAugust 19, 2011 – 1:29 pm
