First Female Monarch From Mexico 2010

Yea!  Finally!

We finally saw a Monarch and she laid a few eggs.  She was pretty worn, color-wise, so I’m guessing she has made the trip from Mexico.

As soon as I saw her I kinda ran around like an idiot because I was so excited.  I go barreling in the house to grab the camera and made my African Grey Parrot fall from her perch.  Then I run outside with the camera, and unknowingly dropped my iPhone in the pool.  The iPhone sat in the pool for about 5 minutes, and miraculously didn’t have any damage (thank you Otterbox iPhone case).

While my iPhone sat in the pool I did manage to get a few pictures of this Female Monarch laying some eggs.  She didn’t hang around very long nor lay too many eggs so I hope she decides to return.

texdr - I have 4 different bird apps on my iPhone and I’m constantly listening to those so I can figure out the sounds I am hearing despite not actually being able to see the bird. For example, I have always though this kind of screeching sound was from the Squirrels. Then just yesterday I played the sound of a Barn Owl and it matches perfectly. Now I just need to find that Owl!March 28, 2010 – 9:46 pm

LeAnn - Yes their sound! I heard their sound and had no idea who
they were. It is very unusual.March 28, 2010 – 9:42 pm

texdr - My Spicebush just started forming some leaves as well. Last year was the first time I had them. I love those Chrysalises! I wish I had Cedar Waxwing but as much as I listen for their sounds, I never hear them from my backyardMarch 28, 2010 – 9:35 pm

LeAnn - I can relate to your excitement, sometimes it doesn’t
take much to make us happy. LOL Glad to hear you are
having some good sightings. I have had several different
butterflies come through but have not been able to ID them,
too fast for me. I have had a couple of Spicebush stop in
and mud puddle last week. My spicebush plant is just starting
to leaf out. I did have my first bird sighting last week,
a flock of cedar waxwings. And yes I was very excited!

Leecy - We were sitting out in the backyard listening and watching the birds he just started ‘freaking out and pointing’ “BUTTERFLY!!!” as he ran in the house. “Mamasita” as I call this butterfly (since she came from Mexico) came from the south over our fence… As he followed her to the butterfly section of our yard, I sat at the first plant that Mamasita laid her eggs on. As I was looking for the 4 she laid there, something caught my eye. I looked up and saw a Red Admiral butterfly fly by. I have never seen this butterfly in our yard before. I think I’ve only ever seen it in the Butterfly Habitat at the Museum in Houston. Of course by the time I got up from the ground to go look for this new butterfly, it was gone.

As he was inside down loading the above photos, I stayed outside on the ‘look out’ for more butterflies. I saw a yellow butterfly out of the corner of my eye and I looked up and saw it was a Giant Swallowtail! I ran to the window to get L to come out in a hurry to get photos of it (since he got the 7D camera, I don’t know how to use it). The Giant didn’t sit still long enough for him to get any shots.

Very exciting day in our yard for butterflies for the new season!!March 28, 2010 – 7:51 pm
