Monthly Archives: September 2009
I mentioned in an earlier post how we are starting to see an increase in the number of Butterflies. That is especially true of the Polydamas Swallowtail. All told, we have close to 100 Caterpillars that we are raising inside, and who knows how many are still in the backyard. Truth is, the Polydamas are…

I bit the bullet and ordered a new camera, the Canon EOS 7D. I was fortunate enough to have pre-ordered the camera on September 2nd, as most places have already filled their initial allotment from Canon. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the camera won’t arrive until Monday and I hope I’m…

We’re starting to see an increase in the number of Butterflies we have. One of the Butterfly Caterpillars that we haven’t seen for a while are the Eastern Black Swallowtails. We haven’t seen too many of the adults, but they are making their presence known as our Fennel is really starting to get chewed down….

Just wanted to mention a couple of things about this new website. First, if you click on the pictures, it “should” open up a new window and allow you to view the picture in a larger size. I was having trouble with it last night, but today it seems to be working a bit better. …

Is there such a thing as growing feathers on a beak?

It’s been a while but I mentioned how I was signed up for a couple of classes involving Butterflies. Both of the classes were offered by the Houston Arboretum. The first class was Butterflies of Houston and the Upper Texas Gulf Coast taught by Nancy Greig, Ph.D. She is the Curator of Entomology at the…

Remember a couple of weeks ago how I posted about finally getting the 2 Spicebush plants from Joshua’s? Well those Caterpillars are starting to grow, really grow. These have to be the coolest looking Caterpillars of all the Butterflies (in my opinion). Compare the above pictures with how these Caterpillars originally started out. Quite a…

Sometimes when we’re out in the backyard pulling weeds, feeding the fish, or simply not paying attention to what we should be, the dogs decide it would be a good time for a swim. This is particularly true for Maggie, our Golden Retriever. If she had a choice, she’d probably choose to just live in…

Whew, what a week! So much for the easy migration to a new site. Anyway, I’m not going to start complaining (yet), I’m just glad you’re visiting my new blog. I’m hoping that everything from my old blog at texdr.wordpress.com has successfully transferred over. If you subscribed at my old blog, you’ll need to re-subscribe…

I found a new article this evening and it’s quite interesting. It talks about how Butterflies migrate. In a nutshell, it has been commonly thought that Butterflies migrate by using their brain, but as it turns out they migrate by using their brain and antennas together. If the Butterflies antenna are painted black, or not…

In just the couple of short months I have been doing this, I have come close to outgrowing its capabilities. As a result, I will soon (I will notify everyone beforehand) begin migrating this site over to a new website. At first it should look exactly the same as it does now. However, with this…

Here’s another brief video of the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds. However, I must confess. This video is shot from an interesting perspective. I mentioned to Leecy that I need to try different angles when I am taking pictures. Leecy took that comment and thought I was suggesting that she should shoot the video from a different…

We got bombarded this evening. There must have been 20-30 Ruby Throated Hummingbirds invading the feeders tonight. While I was taking pictures, Leecy was laying down filming them with the video camera. It was just one year ago that Hurricane Ike came through and I’m sure disrupted the migration of the Hummingbirds. I don’t recall…

Warning. These next two pictures are gross. I noticed this weird looking Dove from a distance today and I was hoping to get a picture of it. Unfortunately, I did get some pictures, but they are not that good, and what they do show is gross. I think this Dove is infected with Trichomoniasis. After…

I thought I might try something different (Leecy gave me the idea). I recorded a short video (just a hair over 1 minute) of the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds in our backyard. For the majority of the video, you see them sipping sugar water from 2 of the feeders. At the end of the video, you’ll…
