Butterfly and Wildlife Gardening And Photography In Houston Texas
Monthly Archives: August 2009I decided to post these as well since I feel like I am baring my soul tonight. One of the first things I did in the backyard 6 years ago was begin planting Bamboo and building the Pond. I’ve changed the Pond about 3 times compared to what it looks like today. Notice how small… As promised. Here is a quick “walk-around” tour of my backyard. I haven’t even seen it myself Let me know what you think, good or bad. Okay, I just watched the video so let me verbally walk you through it. The start of the video is looking out the backdoor. Straight in front to the… Just a super quick video of a Dragonfly landing on Leecy’s hand. It’s windy outside. Since a few of you requested to see my backyard and how everything is set up, I attempted to just do a video. My backyard is too big to utilize a camera and a wide angle lens in a single shot. I’ll try and post it later tonight if I can remember how to do… I probably spent about 3-4 hours on and off today waiting to take pictures of Hummingbirds. Never before have I been able to take a picture of Hummingbirds with their wings stopped in motion. Today was my lucky day. This next shot was of the Ruby Throated Hummingbird taking a drink from the new Hummingbird… Part of the advantage of waking up early for taking pictures is that the light is much better than it is in the evening. I haven’t paid that close of attention before, but after these photos I must say that Doves really do have a beautiful flight (does that make sense?). I kinda messed up. … The Mourning Doves are generally peaceful birds. The Woodpecker never is. He always tries to scare the other birds off when he is feeding. In the end, nobody won, as all of their flapping (Doves) and squawking (Woodpecker) scared everyone off the feeder. Here’s the Woodpecker squawking just a little louder. I saw something I’ve never seen today. It was two Fritillary’s mating. At least I think that’s what they were doing. The male (I’m assuming the flying Fritillary) kept fanning his wings over the female. In turn, she would just keep flying to different places on the ground. Clearly she was playing hard to get:-) I’ll be posting some new Hummingbird photos later tonight. I got up bright and early this morning to catch the early morning light. I got some good birds in flight shots, but no hummingbirds. That changed when I went back out in the afternoon. Check back later tonight for the new photos! Just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all of y’all who recently posted comments and came by to view my blog. In the past week this blog is averaging almost 50 views per day. To me, that’s fantastic! Seriously, thanks for taking the time to view my blog, comment on the… I added a new page at the top of this blog called “Archives.” This will list every post I’ve ever done title by title. If you just found this blog or perhaps didn’t see some of my earlier posts, just click on the Archive page (Home, About, History, Archives). I also reorganized the Categories (right… It finally happened. I finally got a couple of shots of the Ruby Throated Hummingbird. It’s not that they haven’t been around, they have (for the last two weeks), but trying to get a photograph is a whole different story. In this first shot, I could hear the Hummingbird (I’ve learned to recognize their sound)… Here’s something new we haven’t tried before, nor have I photographed before. There’s an old Bamboo stick around a bunch of our nectar plants and you can always find a Dragonfly resting there. For whatever reason, Leecy just placed her fingers over the top of the Bamboo stick and sure enough, the Dragonfly just landed… We haven’t seen any Eastern Black Swallowtails lately. However, today was different. Nearly all the Butterflies we’ve ever seen were floating around the yard somewhere today. The picture below is an Eastern Black Swallowtail laying eggs on the Fennel. |
