Odd Woodpecker

Remember that white headed Woodpecker I mentioned last night that I was hoping to get a picture of today?  Well, I got it.

By all indications, this “should” be a Red Bellied Woodpecker, but this one has a white head.  Not sure what that indicates.  Is it just a young Red Bellied Woodpecker or does the white head indicated something else?  Whatever it is, I think I’ll call this one Curly since it’s “bald.”

Based on this next picture, it looks like a little patch of color is coming in on the top of its head.

Young Red Headed Woodpecker?

Elizabeth - It’s in juvenile state now. Will be interesting to see the color change.August 22, 2009 – 10:32 pm

Rybird - I just saw one like that, it appears to be a juvenile red bellied woodpecker.
from state of ct website.
The red-bellied woodpecker is medium to large-sized (9 inches). It has black and white barring on the wings and a pale, grayish tan underside. Males and females both have a red nape, but only the male has a red crown (females have a gray crown). Juveniles have a brown head with no red at all.
Great pics you have there too!
