Monthly Archives: August 2009A couple pictures showing young Ruby Throated Hummingbirds in flight. One is a young male but I’m not sure about the other. Here’s another When the Hummers aren’t sipping sugar water, they appear to spend their time keeping watch over the feeders and looking for females. Here’s a young male keeping watch over the feeders. Although we’re not seeing any Fritillaries right now, that hasn’t stopped our Passion Vine from flowering like crazy. Here’s a close up shot of one of the flowers. Probably one of the strangest looking flowers there is. If you click on the picture, you can even see the pollen on the flower. Before I start posting a bunch of pictures tonight (Saturday) I wanted to just share some thoughts for whomever may be interested. I’ve been posting lots of pictures of the Hummingbirds because right now I am experiencing a lull in Butterflies in the backyard. That being said, I did see a Monarch caterpillar feeding yesterday. … I got a couple of good photos of a young male (see the small patch of red on his neck in the second picture?) Ruby Throated Hummingbird. These shots are probably the closest I’ve been able to get to these birds while they are feeding. If you click on the image, you can see lots… I’ve got lots and lots of Ruby Throated Hummingbird to share with everyone that I took over the last couple of days. It looks as if the migration of the Hummingbirds is starting to pick up. We counted at least 5 last night, 2 of which are males. With 2 males being so protective of… I figure I’m wearing them out already. I also know (based on daily visits), that folks don’t particularly like to hear me complain either. In either case, I’m still going to whine a little bit. I’m not getting home until after dark which means that I haven’t been taking pictures. Seriously, it is frustrating to… I’m not sure if this is the same female Monarch that has been around for the past week or if she is a new (but old) migrated Monarch. Whatever she is, I do miss seeing these type Butterflies. We actually had two Monarchs today, this one, which was very faded, and another that was much… This is not one of my better pictures but I decided to post it anyway Here’s a Male Ruby Throated Hummingbird. Remember that white headed Woodpecker I mentioned last night that I was hoping to get a picture of today? Well, I got it. By all indications, this “should” be a Red Bellied Woodpecker, but this one has a white head. Not sure what that indicates. Is it just a young Red Bellied Woodpecker or does… I mentioned last night that we haven’t seen Michael J. Frog (Bullfrog) in quite a while. We finally did see him last night after we got a good rain. Ordinarily, Michael J. hides during the day, but today was different. He dove in the pool early this morning while I was out taking pictures. He… I set up my one man chair blind early this morning to take some pictures of birds. Is this a young female Cardinal. It’s hard for me to tell whether these young Cardinals are male or female when they are still getting colors on their wings and beak. Well not really, but I realize I haven’t posted much this week. I’ve been getting home a little later than normal, then we’ve actually had some rain (yea!) a few nights as well. I’m going to try the early morning Saturday ritual and get some pictures. It’s supposed to be really hot and humid tomorrow… |
