Another new visitor we had this weekend was a group of Purple Martins. We had already taken down the Martin house when this weekend there was a new flock of them darting around. I thought these guys had already starting migrating north, so I’m not sure why they started showing up.

Monthly Archives: July 2009 This weekend we had a new Butterfly come to visit. It’s a Cloudless Sulphur Butterfly. Although I say it’s a Cloudless Sulphur I could be wrong. In one of my books it says their host plant is clovers, whereas another says it is Senna. This Butterfly was extremely small compared to the “normal” Sulphur we… We’re not sure why this particular Queen caterpillar decided to move on to the Chrysalis stage so early. This was a very small caterpillar when it stopped eating and formed a Chrysalis. You may notice that the Queen Chrysalis looks almost identical to the Monarch Chrysalis This is one of the adults roaming around the garden. We also have lots of baby Lizards roaming around. This may be one of the better flower pictures I have taken. It’s just a Sunflower that formed from the dropped bird seed from the bird feeder. I may actually have to print this one someday. Click on the picture for the full size image, it’s quite detailed. Allow me to introduce Mr. Happy, the smiling Dragonfly. It does look like it’s smiling right? I haven’t researched what kind of Dragonfly this is, but I did notice his blue nose, hence the title of this post:-). I’m pretty sure this is a Carolina Chickadee. These are tiny little birds but they do have quite a voice on them. This guy was drinking out of one of the bird baths in the backyard. The picture is not that great, but I did think it was kinda interesting. For those that are wondering,… To me, these are one of the prettiest Dragonflies. It’s a Roseate Skimmer. Granted, the face isn’t that beautiful, but their color (pinkish-red) I think is really nice. I don’t know if these insects occur in the northern states, but in Texas they are quite common. It’s a Cicada, I have no idea what particular species. What I do know is that these things make a lot of noise during the summer months. I photographed this one in my Maple tree. Despite their… More experimentation with “critters” in flight. The Doves we have in our backyard are here all year round. They also seem to like being on a schedule. They will come and feed in the early morning, then about 5 in the afternoon. Here’s another shot Today I was experimenting using the manual settings on my camera and trying to take pictures of “critters” in flight. This isn’t the sharpest picture in the world, but I thought it looked kinda cool. This is a female Cardinal heading over to the bird feeder.  These guys are all over the place. I’m not sure what situation(s) (weather, plants, nest) has contributed to these being so prevalent, but there are a ton of them flying around the backyard the last couple of weeks. From what I read, they build their nests in dead wood, bamboo, or “wood dwellings” (i.e., houses). … Got my lens rental today 70-200 f2.8. It’s quite heavy but looks great. Compared to my 100-400, this rental lens definitely focuses fast so I can really see the potential for the type of shots I would like to take.Here’s my problem(s). I took over 200 photos tonight and out of that I maybe kept… In the midst of taking pictures of the Hummingbird Moths, a gigantic Dragonfly decided to fly around our porch light. I don’t have a ruler handy (so if someone wants to measure the size of this thing based on the picture, feel free), but this was one of the largest Dragonfly’s I’ve ever seen. |
