Monthly Archives: July 2009
To review, today, Friday July 31 2009, we had a total of 10 butterflies hatch today. Two Queens, 7 Polydamas, and 1 Gulf Fritillary. Since all the other hatchlings got their picture posted, it’s only fair that I post a picture of the Gulf Fritillary that hatched today as well.

I say triplets, but in reality we had 7 Polydamas hatch today, but 4 of them flew off as soon as I released them. The remaining 3 I placed on the new plant I bought from Joshua’s Native Plants (Hummingbird Bush). The first shot is of the “triplets.” Here’s a shot with the wings spread…

Today we had 2 Queen Butterflies hatch today. One was a male and one was a female. I didn’t particularly care for this shot, but Leecy thought it looked “creative.” Notice how the male Queen Butterfly has those 2 dark spots at the bottom of his wings, just like the Monarch?

As I was looking back through this blog I noticed I had only posted 1 picture of the Giant Swallowtail Caterpillar so I figured it was time to post a couple more. Before I get to the pictures, let me share some history. In both my backyard and front yard I have seen the Giant…

I’m getting better at this Birds in Flight thing, but not quite there just yet. However, even though some of these pictures have some weaknesses in the sharpness, eyes being covered, mystery orbs appearing etc, I still find them kinda fascinating to look at. Leecy thought this first photo looked like the Dove’s wings were…

Although the Monarch butterflies won’t be migrating through Texas for another 1-2 months, I am starting to see another creature that uses up lots of energy in their migrations. It’s the Ruby Throated Hummingbird. We probably just have 1-2 right now from the best I can tell, but generally once they get here in full…

I’ve got a great suggestion for those of you interested in Butterflies. Even those of you who aren’t totally into Butterflies will likely appreciate this movie. It’s produced by PBS and is called “Nova, The Incredible Journey Of Butterflies.” I just watched it from our Netflix rental. However, before you go and try and get…

Our first Queen Butterfly hatched today! I must say, she is quite the looker. Previously we had only seen the Queen caterpillars, we never saw any Chrysalises. Right now we have 2 more Queen Butterfly Chrysalises and 1 more Queen caterpillar.

Now this is how it should be. Everyone getting along, males, females, birds of a different feather, etc. However, shortly after this shot, they started picking on each other for the best food. Still, it was a nice thought while it lasted:-).

Busy weekend in relation to Butterflies. Sixteen Polydamas Swallowtails hatched and we have twice as many as that should hatch at any time. I’m getting better at taking pictures of them in flight so I’ll post some of those this week. If you been reading, you also heard about Lovey Dovey, the baby Mourning Dove…

During the first day we had 10 hatch, yesterday about 5, and just 1 today. They all are apparently staying local as they have gone straight to the Pipevine and began laying eggs. When they need some energy, they go over to the Butterfly Bush or Milkweed, then it’s back to laying eggs.

I’m getting better I think at taking shots of birds in flight. One shot is of a Woodpecker who grabs a piece of food then instantly flies off. The other is a Carolina Chickadee that I just got lucky with.

Meet “Lovey Dovey.” We’re not sure what was wrong with this little girl. The dogs found her. They didn’t hurt her, it was just obvious she couldn’t fly. We picked her up and examined her. Her wings looked fine. She did have some poop stuck to her butt, so of course I was nominated to…

In my previous posts tonight, all the pictures were taken with my 70-200mm rental lens. I’ve been complaining (on here and to Leecy) about my disappointment with the sharpness of this lens. Just for kicks, I grabbed my trusty old 100-400mm lens to see if perhaps I’ve never really taken any sharp photos before. In…
