Take a look at these Polydamas (I’m pretty sure that’s what they are) caterpillars. These guys are huge and they still haven’t gone to pupate. They look to me like they are literally about to bust. Speaking of Polydamas, I’ve been struggling on how to differentiate between the Pipevine Swallowtail caterpillars and the Polydamas Swallowtail…

Butterfly and Wildlife Gardening And Photography In Houston Texas
Monthly Archives: June 2009I think I have mentioned before about how Sparrows will try and take over the nesting sites of Purple Martins. For whatever reason, there are now about 10 Sparrows (1 male and many females from what I can tell) flying around and attempting to build nests in my Purple Martin house. This drives me absolutely… About those little plastic containers that I use to house some of the Caterpillars (I think they are the “critter cages” sold at Petco). Although these containers are great for housing the Caterpillars, they aren’t so great for hatching Chrysalises. The reason is because once the Chrysalis hatches and the Butterfly emerges, it needs something… Our Passionvine is growing all over the place, like up the Queen Palm, on the Bamboo, across the Milkweed, etc. However, that doesn’t mean that a Gulf Fritillary really cares all that much where the plant is growing, or even if it is growing. Here’s the story. I was cutting some Passionvine to bring inside… To simply say I’m on vacation this week so I’m posting a little slower than usual. I do have quite a few pictures to post and I’ll do my best to post them tomorrow. Oh, and the weather here (for those reading that are not in the Houston area) is horrendous. The “official” heat index… Same Bullfrog, different night. We’ve decided to name him Michael J. Frog. I don’t know what he does during the day, but during the late evening hours he apparently loves to take a dip in the pool and then (I’m assuming) hunt for his dinner. Michael J. Frog with an “eye” tattoo on his arm… Having a nice normal Thursday night dinner (pizza of course) and suddenly the doorbell rang. Our neighbor’s two young boys came over with a baby Mockingbird. They said they found him in their backyard so they brought him over to me and ask what they should do. I said just set him down in our… So I go to let the dogs out for their last bathroom break of the night. Suddenly I hear a big splash. I grab the flashlight and camera, and look who I see! It’s the Bullfrog taking a dip in the night. Some dogs have a really tough life. Take for example, Sascha and Maggie. These poor gals have it really rough. Both of them are on the “Barf Diet” or Raw Food Diet (you can Google the terms if you are interested). How’s this for a dog’s life? Food Fresh ground turkey (from the grocery store)… If you’ve been reading for a while, you may remember that at some point I posted some pictures of Maggie, my Golden Retriever. Maggie is the old lady at 8 years old. Sascha is the big bully. Sascha is a German Shepherd (yes they can be black). I imported her from the Czech Republic 5… We’re up to around 90 of these Pipevine or Polydamas caterpillars. I always thought they were Pipevine but I’ve been seeing so many of the Polydamas Swallowtail’s laying eggs on the Pipevine that now I’m not so sure. One thing is for sure, they not only are born side by side, but they apparently continue… Here’s something I haven’t seen in a while. A Gree Tree Frog. There used to be lots of these hanging around last year but I haven’t seen hardly any at all this year. Although these Frogs look rather cute, they are very loud! Decided to do a little formatting change in terms of color. Let me know if you love it, hate it, or are still deciding Thanks Before I share the pictures, I have a confession. I really need to improve in taking pictures of moving subjects. I took (or tried to) over 30 pictures of a couple of Polydamas Swallowtail (the only Swallowtail without the “tails”) laying eggs and out of the 30 or so, only 2 were keepers and even… |
