This weekend I tried to do something a little different with my camera. I pulled out my Canon Macro Lens (EF 100mm f/2.8). I haven’t used this lens in quite a while so I had forgotten that it definitely takes a tripod to be able to get clear photographs with this lens. I spent alot…

I’m apparently on a roll with critters that are considered pests in the garden or at leasts things I don’t particularly care for when it comes to gardening. I’ve got two more examples. First is a very small grasshopper that was on my Cassia tree which is one of the host plants for the Sulphur…

Remember that picture of the young Mockingbird doing the crane (see earlier posts)? Well here’s some kind of Black Bird doing the same thing. Just like the Assassin bug, I don’t care much for these guys either. Why? For whatever reason, these particular kind of Black Birds (I don’t know what the official name of…

And every other part of your body is the mantra of this bug. Depending on what resource you read, these are either good bugs or bad bugs. Personally, I view them as both, but if I see them on my Butterfly plants they get squashed. This is an Assassin bug. From what I understand they…

I guess I haven’t really paid that much attention to Dragonflies in the past. I know they eat bugs, and I know Martins love eating them, but other than that, I can’t say I know a whole bunch. I especially never really paid attention to how big their eyes are in relation to the rest…

Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you once I have an interest in something I immerse myself in the subject, and that includes Butterfly Gardening. That being said, I thought I might actually post something useful for current and future Butterfly Gardeners. Books – The following books I currently own and are…

This is Maggie our Golden Retriever. Over the years she’s had to put up with quite a bit from Halloween Costumes, Christmas card photos, enduring Coco our African Grey Parrot, and then Sascha, our big bully of a German Shepherd. This photo might represent a new low for what Maggie has had to endure. It…

Don’t get me wrong. I love Butterfly Gardening and I love creating an environment where Monarch Butterflies can safely grow from an egg to a full fledged Butterfly. However, today was crazy. Twenty-two Monarchs hatched today, 14 yesterday, 12 the day before that, and I can’t even recall how many hatched the day before that. …

Check out this little guy. He was actually in the Butterfly Enclosure and I have no idea how he got in there. I say “he” but “he” could be a “she” for all I can tell. He/she was no bigger than my little finger, if that big. We released him in the garden to munch…

If you’re like me, you’ve had a long week. So out of the kindness of my heart I thought I would present you with a little eye candy. Look at the picture below. Look reeaaaal close. Can you spot the insect in the picture? Feel free to click on the picture to enlarge the image….

We’ve had a “fruitful” Memorial holiday weekend when it comes to Monarch Butterflies hatching. We had 1 Monarch Butterfly hatch on Friday, 3 on Saturday, 4 on Sunday, and 10 today (Monday). For those that are mathematically challenged, that’s 18 Butterflies. Of the 18, ten of those were males and eight were females. Tomorrow should…

We had quite a weekend in terms of diversity in our backyard. I photographed this guy right around the same time I was photographing the Long Tailed Skipper. It’s some kind of Dragonfly, and obviously Red, but I have no idea of the specific name of this guy. One thing I did notice is just…

Actually the title has nothing to do with this post, I was just trying to think of something witty. I’ve never posted a picture of this next Butterfly because they are pretty hard to photograph. They bounce from leaf to leaf constantly. This little guy is known as a Long Tailed Skipper or Bean Leaf…

So while Brutus is out stretching his wings on the Butterfly Bush, Betty Sue was born. Not wanting to have Brutus feel like he was an only child, we took Betty Sue out to meet her brother once her wings dried. You can also really get a good idea of the difference between a male…

To recap, Timothia laid a ton of eggs. Alvin was her first born. Then came Brutus. Next, we have Betty Sue and Bobbie Jo. Here is Betty Sue (I don’t name them, my significant other does) just moments from birth. Notice the small crack appearing at the top of the Chrysalis.
